An Aboriginal group has launched legal action to block construction of a 63,000-seat stadium for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics on culturally significant land. The Queensland government announced in March plans to build a new A$3.8bn ($2.5bn) stadium at Victoria Park - a 60-hectare site - with federal funding. But the Yagara Magandjin Aboriginal Corporation (YMAC) and Save Victoria Park group are asking the federal environment minister to declare the park a protected cultural heritage site, which could halt the development.
Victoria Park holds"great significance and history" for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, YMAC spokeswoman Gaja Kerry Charlton said."We are deeply concerned about the ancient trees, artefacts and vital ecosystems that exist there. There may even be ancestral remains," she explained. A federal government spokesperson confirmed receipt of the request to protect the site under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act."The department is reviewing the application and will follow standard procedures, including consulting with the applicant, project proponents and the Queensland government," they said.
If approved, the stadium would host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic opening and closing ceremonies before becoming Queensland's premier venue for Australian Rules football and cricket post-Games. The legal challenge comes amid growing global scrutiny of Olympics-related developments, with critics arguing such projects often displace local communities and damage the environment. In Brisbane, protesters have also raised concerns about the cost and necessity of a new stadium when existing venues could be upgraded instead.
The Queensland government has defended its plans, saying the new stadium will leave a lasting legacy for the city and state."This is about creating a world-class precinct that will serve Brisbane for generations to come," a spokesperson said. But opponents argue the cultural and environmental costs are too high."We're not against the Olympics or sport," said Save Victoria Park campaigner Tom Smith."We're against the destruction of our shared heritage for a two-week event."
The case highlights tensions between development and preservation as Brisbane prepares to become the third Australian city to host the Olympics after Melbourne (1956) and Sydney (2000). With the games still eight years away, the legal battle over Victoria Park may be just the beginning of a series of controversies surrounding the 2032 Olympics.
