Two barges being used to launch fireworks caught fire during a summer festival in Japan's port city of Yokohama on Monday evening, forcing five crew members to jump into the sea to escape the flames. The workers were rescued by nearby boats, with one taken to hospital with minor injuries, public broadcaster NHK reported. The incident occurred around 19:30 local time (10:30 GMT) when pyrotechnics being prepared for the display accidentally ignited on board, setting both vessels ablaze.

Organisers had planned to launch some 20,000 fireworks over 25 minutes as the highlight of the annual Kanagawa Shimbun Fireworks Festival, one of the three major fireworks displays in the Kanto region. But the event was abruptly cancelled after the fire broke out, leaving thousands of spectators disappointed. Video footage showed thick black smoke billowing from the burning barges as firefighting boats sprayed water to douse the flames.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but early reports suggest a stray firework may have ignited others being prepared on deck. Yokohama Coast Guard officials said both barges were completely destroyed in the blaze, which took about an hour to bring under control. No other injuries were reported.
